In your reflection paper on the American Experience on the invention of television, address the following: 1. Compare and contrast RCA's strategy of dealing with competitors with Microsoft's present day strategy of dealing with its competitors. (If you don't know about Microsoft, it's time for you to visit the library. Check newspapers' front page and business sections on just about any day in the last few months.) Be specific. 2. What advantages did a 14 year old have in the creation of a new technology. Answer this using specific examples. 3. Answer the questions; who gave Philo his grades? Who made him work? What type of hours do you think he worked and why do you think that? Who motivated Philo? New question: Was Philo guaranteed to be successful in his quest to invent television? Be thoughtful in all your answers. These are extremely complicated and involved questions. 4. Reflect on the pro's and con's of patent protection. This will also be encompassed in the Microsoft question. (Note when Philo's patents ended and how world events might have influenced the effectiveness of his patent protection.) You may have to wait until Monday when we finish watching the film to completely answer this. 5. What lessons are there that you learned from Philo's experience. (Be specific.) Is it easy to change the world? (This is not a simple yes/no question.) |
Please note that this reflection paper is a first cut on a term paper. We'll expand on the themes throughout the year. |
